Where IoT Technology Meets Artificial Intelligence: AIoT

In the early 90s, several academicians working at Cambridge University laid the first foundations of the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) by establishing a system that could monitor whether the coffee machine is empty online and in real-time. Years later, the concept of IoT has become a part of our lives with the spread of the internet. The number of devices connected to the internet and communicating with one another is continually expanding.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a system that feeds on data, draws conclusions with what it learns from this data, establishes connections, finds problems, and solves them automatically. Therefore, data is critical for the proper functioning of AI systems. A large amount of data can already be collected using the IoT. AI simply makes it more useful. In short, AI and IoT are technologies that add value to each other. The new technology in which these two concepts are used together is called Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT).

At the intersection of these two technologies, edge computing comes into play. Usually, AI runs on this edge device and that’s how it integrates with the IoT. Before the collected data is transferred to the cloud, it comes as an input to the artificial intelligence model running on the edge device, and meaningful data is sent to the cloud.ย

AIoT can be exemplified by smart home and self-driving car concepts. For example, it is possible that a sound is detected from the sensors and a notification is sent to the user’s phone, such as if your dog is barking abnormally. Detection of sound comes from sensors in the IoT, a pre-trained AI model can classify that sound like a dog barking.

IoT technologies, which have started to enter our lives in many areas, are expected to make them easier thanks to the technological developments to be experienced in the coming years.
